Our Story

The History

We have continued past history as a place that provides overnight stay for travellers as was the same in the 1700s when the site was an old inn.

In the Spanish war a Spanish sailor saved the life of our Admiral who had been shot and fell into the sea. The sailor pulled the Admiral back onto the ship. The ship returned and ported in Gravesend and the Admiral, as thanks gave the Spanish sailor a bag of gold coins. The sailor walked from Gravesend to Vigo and saw the Inn, he bought it with his gold coins and named it Vigo Inn. The Inn provided overnight stays for travellers.

Subsequently Vigo Inn became a pub and the nearby village was named Vigo Village after it.

Several decades later, the pub was closed for several years. Andy saw the closed Inn one day and decided to buy it. The pub reopened and hosted live music. Unfortunately, several years later, through lack of trade the pub closed.

Sue Leyser, Andy’s partner manages the site and they both continue to create gardens nestled within the grounds – each one individual. With a different ambiance, including ponds and seating areas. Their ambition is for anyone to come, sit and relax and take in nature. Hopefully providing a sense of peace and wellbeing. Andy’s son Ben also helps to maintain and help the site grow with his ideas.

The Vigo Retreat was born

From the site of the pub a Bed and Breakfast business was created for over night stays and from one initial unit it has now expanded to eight. We have created an event space with Marquee, Barbeque and Bar shack – all surrounded by ponds, gardens and fire Pitt with seated areas.

Sue Leyser, Andrew’s partner manages the site and is available to answer any enquires, regarding the business.
